Ürgüp

Located 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) east of Nevşehir, the Ürgüp area is famous for its fairy chimneys, fabulous structures shaped from soft, volcanic tufa by wind and rain. One of the most important settlements in the Cappadocia region, Ürgüp was an important religious center as far back as the Byzantine era, and the area is still home to numerous historic churches dating from that period. It is an important wine-producing region and attracts countless tourists year-round. It is also the perfect place to take a balloon tour and get a bird's-eye-view of the region's unique geographical structure, its valleys and fairy chimneys as you witness a truly romantic sunrise.
